![]() In so doing, the basic question being addressed is how has Pan-Africanism shaped the different eras and how can it do so today? In order to delve into the role of Pan-Africanism within different eras, one must be willing to appreciate the complexity of Pan-Africanism it goes without saying, that an open-minded approach becomes pivotal. This article attempts to explore the role of Pan-Africanism over specific eras – whilst paying particular attention to the role it can play in Africa today. Finally, this article is divided into five parts namely: Defining Pan-Africanism Pan-Africanism before Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade Pan-Africanism during Slavery and Nationalism Pan-Africanism during Independence and Post-Independent Africa and Conclusion. As this article aims to kindle the interest in the exploration of Pan-Africanism, it will not be able to capture all the thematic complexities and personalities that have played crucial role in developing the ideology and political force behind it, but it is an essential first step. At a simple level, it is the conviction that African societies, both within Africa and the Diaspora, apportion not just a common history, but also a common destiny. Actually, Pan-Africanism reflects a variety of political outlooks.
